BrazilFW Linux Updater for BFW floppy and hdd Version

the versions available to update are:
2.30 FLOPPY and HDD
2.30.1 FLOPPY and HDD
2.31 HDD (NEW!!)

This package can be found at:
http://www.brazilfw.com.br/users/tarsiu ... pdater.tgz

BrazilFW Linux Updater

Version 0.6 of this Manual
Version 2.5 of BFW.Updater

1.0- Description
1.1- Files Included
1.2- Features
2.0- Installation
2.1- Configuration
3.0- Usage
4.0- FAQ

1.0- Description

This package allows you to download and copy a new version of BFW
without taking the floppy out of the floppy drive or without
inserting a floppy in case you are using HDD installation

1.1- Files Included

/bin/bfw.updater: contains the script itself
/var/lib/lrpkg/bfwupdater.list: the list of files of this package
/var/lib/lrpkg/bfwupdater.version: the version of the installed bfw.updater
/var/lib/lrpkg/bfwupdater.help: this help file
/var/lib/lrpkg/bfwupdater.configs: list of parameters
/var/http/htdocs/cgi-bin/bfw.updater.cgi: webadmin file
/var/http/htdocs/cgi-bin/bfw.updaterconfig.cgi: webadmin config file
/var/http/htdocs/cgi-bin/pak_bfwupd.inc: webadmin menu file

Configuration is written in /etc/coyote/coyote.conf

1.2- Features

- Ability to update BFW version while it is running
- Webadmin, making it easier than ever to update brazilfw
- Supports downloading from different servers, reducing the chance of
not being able to download the upgrade
- Ability to do a rollback if something went wrong (in case .tgz
package is broken)

2.0- Installation

Copy the package into the floppy disk, boot your BFW and go to item 3
on this manual.

Or download this package using pkg.installer and enjoy :D (this
option is better because it's no use to have this package
on the floppy all the time wasting space... it's only needed
when a new version comes out)

2.1- Configuration
Configuration parameters are kept in:
/etc/coyote/coyote.conf

Here is the list of parameters and their descriptions:

BFWUPD_SOURCE
default value:http://www.brazilfw.com.br/users/tarsius/updates
These are the servers where updates are kept, feel free to change them
if you need to (DO NOT PUT A SLASH AT THE END)

BFWUPD_SAVELOG
default value:yes
If set to "yes" it prints output to BFWUPD_LOG

BFWUPD_LOG
default value:/var/log/bfwupdater.log
This file contains a log of bfw.updater actions when BFWUPD_SAVELOG
is set to "yes"

3.0- Usage

Open a SSH Client and type "bfw.updater VERSION" to install the
brand new version of BFW :D

The update file can be found at BFWUPD_SOURCE

for example, if I want to update to version 2.30 on a floppy
installation with i386 kernel this is what i'll type:

backup
bfw.updater F.2.30.i386
reboot

if I wanted to update to 2.30 for a hdd installation this is what
I would have typed:

backup
bfw.updater H.2.30.i386
reboot

So that config files are saved, then the new version is installed
and then the reboot loads the new version on the next boot.

DO NOT BACKUP AFTER UPDATING... BACKUP BEFORE DOING THE UPDATE
Otherwise your copy of BFW may get back to previous version
or may get corrupt...

4.0- FAQ

4.1- Configuration is lost everytime you update BFW?
No, it doesn't. Because bfw.updater only modifies BFW main
files but not the configuration files

4.2- What happens if the downloaded file is corrupted?
It rolls everything back and leaves your BFW intact,
though it might fail... use at your own risk.

4.3- Can I use this script from webadmin?
Yes!!! now you can... go to webadmin and look for
"update BrazilFW" menu.

4.4- Does BFWUpdater works with HDD installations too?
Yes, it does. It works with Floppy, HDD, CF and USB-Devices
installations, just make sure you select the right version
when you try to update it, F is for Floppy distributions
and H is for HDD, CF and USB-Devices distributions.

4.5- Why it is already on version 2.0?
Because several changes were made since 1.2. It had to be
redesigned almost completely.

4.6- Does BFWUpdater updates also modules files?
Yes, it does since version 2.1.

4.7- BFWUpdater shows many updates, is this normal? should I update bfw right away?
Yes and no, Until version 2.4 bfwupdater showed every version of bfw
available to download (even older versions) so you should not update bfw to
every version if you have bfwupdater 2.4 or older, but if you have bfw 2.5
you should cause this new version only shows those updates with greater version
than your current bfw installation
i got lost between version and updates and bfw, i hope you don't ;)

it's almost ready... i'm testing it and cleaning some bugs...
tarsius

Mensagempor tarsius » Qui Fev 01, 2007 1:58 am

ok... i think i'm done with this "beta" (it's a public release... but if someone else can try it it would be great!)

it has a lot of changes.. well.. they are not "a lot" really... but if you look at the previous version only the webadmin remains unchanged :P...

- it no longer supports downloading from different servers (it was useless.. the only "authorized" releases should appear HERE.... and not anywhere else...)
- new function: it supports HDD, CF and USB installations... now you can update you HDD BFW too...
- code has been almost completely redesigned (so that hdd updates could take place as well as floppy ones)

i have tested it on my floppy BFW and it works ok...
i also tested it on vmware using a hdd installation and it seems to work ok too...

these are the updates availables:
floppy: 2.26, 2.28, 2.30, 2.29.5
hdd,usb,cf: 2.30

give it a try and let me know so i can clean out any bugs... and suggestions are always welcome too...

hello tarsius

thank you for the add-on, it's so usually.

but i think that i found an error, when i try to update to H.2.30.i386 i receive one error:

---Downloading SYSLINUX.DPY from http://www.brazilfw.com.br/users/tarsius/updates:
wget: server returned error 404: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
-Error
Download of SYSLINUX.DPY failed, aborting update

---> So, i think this ocured because the file in the server is named with small letters like: syslinux.dpy

Thanks one more time

.... sorry to everybody for my english

version 2.1

difference?
-now it also updates modules (if new version of bfw came out and it had new modules which were not compatible with older release then bfw would crash when updated using bfw.updater 2.0 or previous)

and that is all... but it was an important thing i hadn't take into account :P

oh and for those who had already downloaded it please open a console and then type:
Código: Selecionar todos
/etc/rc.d/pkgs/rc.bfwupdater reload

cause there's some new config that has to be put into coyote.conf

yes.. that's the idea.... it works on the fly... downtime is just as long as a regular reboot....

without any errors?? i tested it on my floppy version and it worked ok... i also tested it on a hdd installation on vmware and it worked ok too.... so yes, it should be without any errors...

Ok, guess I'm being a little dense here :P

If I have my BFW running off a CF=>IDE adapter, do I want the pkg.installer? And would I just put that on a floppy and install to the CF running installation? I'm about to nuke my BFW install anyway as switching from cable to DSL and from previous VPN to OpenVPN anyways, so I will change from my 2.27.2 install, but definitely interested in the upgradeability of this, would help me stay more up to date.

Thanks!

Ok just to make sure I'm following everything. Sometimes code messes with my mind and I go stupid (or maybe I am really just stupid). I built my BrazilFW box from scratch. It's a HDD installer to an IDE HDD. Two partitions, one for the OS and another for the proxy thing (which I've never played with just knew I needed incase). I started with version 2.30.1. I'm an update phreak and just saw this posted and installed it on my box. I am a lamer and like to use the webadmin, just easier on the mind. I noticed whenever I went to the BrazilFW Update link in the dropdown box it has two version: H.2.30.i386 and h.2.30.1.i386 Which was a little confusing. But for kicks I thought maybe I had to try my version and then click on to check for updated versions. I selected H.2.30.1.i386 and clicked ok. I got the following readout on my screen:

So leads me to think that when it was trying to download modules.ethernet that it crashed the update and then reverted my box back to it's previous state. Which if it did, VERY COOL feature. But leads me to wonder did I get that error because there's no updates avaliable, is there an error and it's trying to actually download from /H.2.30.1.i386 instead of the download, OR is there something else going on that I don't know about.

Anyway I'm just throwing that out there if some more light could be shed on that. I'd rip the program apart and put it back together but I figured before I put in THAT many hours into learning the art you guy's do, or just ask the master who built it for some insight.

Thanks for all the work!

Re: bfw.updater - updating bfw has never been so easy:P

Mensagempor tarsius » Sex Fev 01, 2008 7:15 pm

ok ok, first of all, i'm not a master :P... i'm just a regular guy as you who spent some time developing something i found realllly useful (although for some reason i still have to do some manual work every time a new update comes out... something you (i mean everyone but me) don't have to do... i still can't figure out how but i think i got really f**** here :? ... >| lol  ...)

anyway back to the thing... first of all you said you already have 2.30.1 therefore i see no reason why you should be running this script...
look... the problem is the script is trying to download modules file from "/H.2.30.1.i386/modules.ethernet" which is OBVIOUS not a valid url.... there should be something like this here: "http://www.brazilfw.com.br/users/tarsius/updates/H.2.30.1.i386/modules.ethernet" or something like that but for some reason it doesn't.... (at least in my tests i think it did)... i'll try to fix it and i'll post my results here again.... could you tell me which version of bfw.updater are you using? maybe you have an old version (i used to post every little change i did to the script)

POWerSUrgeSW3 escreveu:H.2.30.i386 and h.2.30.1.i386 Which was a little confusing.
confusing ?? why??

as a matter of fact it does... although it's quite a mess how it is done... a few weeks after i finished the script i realized it could be done in another way which was waaaaaaaaaay better but i didn't have the time to fix it.....

POWerSUrgeSW3 escreveu:Anyway I'm just throwing that out there if some more light could be shed on that. I'd rip the program apart and put it back together but I figured before I put in THAT many hours into learning the art you guy's do, or just ask the master who built it for some insight.
you could do that if you wanted to.... the only thing you should take into account is that this script is based on files on the server which you can see but you cannot change so you should download them to another http site and referrer your script to that site, otherwise it might not work....

First I'm going to start off with saying: DURKA DURKA DURKA

Anyone who can sit and code without living in a dark room that is only lit by computer screens is a master. I've done coding before and found that I've lost chunks of my life. :D And no I'm not trying to suck up.

After getting that out of the way I'll move on. I just thought the script, from reading the description, was going to show when an update was available. Kind of like Windows Update or something to that affect. Something that would see an update and then go download it and install it. Now that I read your post I get it, but regardless that's still awesome to have someone working on an update installer app. Though the reason I tried doing the update was thinking because when it says: Select the one you want and then hit "OK" I thought that was referring more to choosing which version of BrazilFW the user has and then it will check for updates. Hopefully others will learn from my stupidity!

As to what version of BFW.Updater that I'm using is the new one posted, version 2.2

POWerSUrgeSW3 wrote:H.2.30.i386 and h.2.30.1.i386 Which was a little confusing.

confusing ?? why??

- That goes up to what I said before. I thought the drop down ended up being what version the user was supposed to select which version of the software they were currently using for the software to check for updates.

I feel that I have not really posted anything new. But hopefully somehow I've helped. If I don't get a job in the next week I might end up pulling the code apart and putting it back together, I've been out of work for a 2 months now and have done and downloaded all software and games I want and tweaked all my servers and everything to the point I have nothing more to do.

Ending this long post though, thanks for the quick reply! Let me know if there is anything else I can do. I've actually got two BrazilFW boxes running almost a cloned setup of each other. One has less firewall rules and such because it's my girlfriends. So if we need a test box I can always crash her's it's nothing too too important

Tarsius

To update BrazilFW 2.31 is very much easier than 2.30. Because we do not have to rebuild the modules.tgz anymore.

All drivers are inside the new drivers.tgz package. And all the language files are inside the new languages.tgz package.

So, all we have to do now is download all the packages and save than inside the /mnt folder.

ctemlk, first of all, the update is not available yet. Now, back to your problem, your problem is probably this: http://www.brazilfw.com.br/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=58346&p=150689#p143746 which i explained a few posts before, anyway the solution is:

access bfw webadmin
go to update bfw
check that "Modules Update Server" is not empty, if it is not post me a message showing the error.
if it is blank then click "Click here to configure BFW.Updater"
then click "Click here to load BFW.Updater Default Values"
now it shouldn't be blank... try to run the process again but remember that the last version is still not available, we're having some trouble with the ftp server and therefore we cannot upload the fix...

post back if you find yourself in trouble! :D

DO NOT FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE, a bug has been found, after updating bfwupdater a random bug has been detected that makes you lose all your coyote.conf configuration.... FEEDBACK will be posted soon...

ok, i have a temporary http available, but you'll have to do everything i say here OTHERWISE IT WON'T WORK!

REMEMBER TO BACKUP you config before doing this... i tried it on my bfw and it worked but there's always an ODD BIT that changes everything....

1) download brazilfw from here: brazilfw
2) put it in your bfw box... (using wget and then rebooting or whatever method you like except pkgupdater)
DON'T USE pkgupdater here cause this package is not available on brazilfw server (otherwise we wouldn't be doing this)
3) access webadmin -> update brazilfw -> Click here to configure bfwupdater -> Click here to load Tarsius Server
4) Now go back to update brazilfw and see if there's any update available for you...
5) Update!!!

after everything is ready and updated go to webadmin -> update brazilfw -> Click here to configure bfwupdater and load the default values again...
