BFW – WIZARD

Before anything, somethings to consider.
This “How to” is based in the 2.26.0 version of BrazilFW, the first stable version of this system. BrazilFW is based on the discontinued Coyote Linux. As this is the first sable version of BFW WIZARD this “How to” might be soon outdated due to relevant changes in furthers versions. But don't worry, the main stuff will be the same, and actually, whose once installed a Coyote won't have any difficulties, and the ones that never experienced something like this, just pay attention and don't do this in a hurry that indeed you'll succeed.

In this Wizard version some features, that doesn't appeared in Coyote, were added. Like the possibility of creating during the Wizard a DMZ working on a third NIC, and the possibility of creating a HD installer floppy disc.

Once we had cleared up those points we can go on.

Running the Wizard
Your BrazilFW is almost operating, hardware ready and tested, time to build the system disc.
There something that worth a little explanation, most of people may mystify that the system runs on the floppy, once actually it runs on the RAM memory. The floppy is only to load the system and save any configuration change, not losing them on the rebooting. When booting the system is loaded in the RAM and the floppy is just used when you save any change on the configuration or on the boot.

This “how-to” focus on window's wizard, due this OS is far more used among beginners, later on we will publish something of generating the floppy on Linux.

So lets download the floppy builder, the current version is 2.26.0 and you may download it here.
After that you must extract and run BrazilFW.exe (if you are in windows of course), so the wizard will begin with the following screen:

Click in [next] so we can move on into the configurations.

Step 1:
This screen show us the Local Network Configuration, those configurations come as default and in most cases it doesn't need no configuration, but if you need, here you can setup the IP and the NetMask.
In the same screen there is the configuration of your LAN NIC. If you don't know which drive use on you NIC, look for it here
http://ca.geocities.com/mydumbsite/coyote/nics.html, you must find it.

There are fields to setup the IRQ and the IO address of ISA NICs, but as we must take it easy let's suppose you are using a PCI NIC that only need the drivers name.

Step 2:
In this step you will chose the kind of your internet connection.

Step 3:
PPPoE – DSL
If your internet connection is DSL with dynamic IP, and your modem is set as bridge you must choose “PPPoE -DSL” option and fill the fields with the information provided by your Internet provider. The DNS server option can be leaved in blank, valid addresses will be supplied by your provider in authentication time or DNS addresses can be set later via webadmin. In most cases there is no need of changing the “hostname” and “domain” fields.

DHCP – Assigned address
Chose this option if you are using cable modem, additional configuration that you may need must be supplied by your internet provider.

It's important not to confuse this option with the configuration of BrazilFW DHCP server! This configuration will be done in further step.

This connection kind is also used when the BrazilFW is under a router modem that has a DHCP server.

Static IP Configuration
This may be used by connections like: radio, wireless, cable or DSL. All the configuration information is supplied by your Internet provider.

This connection kind is also used when the BrazilFW is under a router modem that DOES NOT HAVE a DHCP server. In this case you must set the network parameters used by the modem.

PPP-Modem Dialup
Although this is not the main purpose of this guide, a little bit of information about dial-up connections won't make any bad. Perhaps this is the most confuse kind of connection to configure in BrazilFW, due to the system doesn't support any modem, if you wanna a dial-up connection, you must have a hardmodem ISA. Softmodems (or winmodems) are not supported by the BrazilFW, therefore the configuration of this kind of connection begins in the hardware itself, you must configure the jumpers, the interruption and the IRQ information that modem will use must be filled up. You also must say which COM port it will use. As there are a lot of models and manufactures in the market, it may be easier to gather information (like initializing strings) in the official forum of BrazilFW or with another user more experienced.

Step 4:
The next step is to configure you WAN NIC (the “Internet NIC Configuration”) configure this in the same way you did in the first step.
Imagem

Step 5:
Here we have the new feature of creating a DMZ on a third NIC.
If you have a third NIC check the “Enabled DMZ Network” option, and then the fields for configuration will be available. If you not check this option no DMZ will be created.
As you can see the defaults settings come with a different range of IP from you LAN, you may change it if you want so.
The hardware settings follows the way as the others NICs.

Step 6:
Time to set up the DHCP server. It's recommended to leave it enabled, this way you can configure the stations to get a dynamic IP from DHCP.
Imagem

Another difference between this wizard and the Coyote one, is that in the Coyote you had to set every IP available on the DHCP, in BFW we just set the IP range (setting where it begins and where it ends) this way the configuration has become more flexible.

Step 7:
Here we can set up the administrative configurations. In the firsts fields you must set your ROOT password, for you security you must repeat the operation. Do not forget this password, if you forget it you will have to make another floppy disc.
Just below you can set up the address of a machine that will receive system logs. On this machine you must install Kiwi so it can receive the logs.
And at the bottom you can set up the webadmin language, the default is English, but you may choose whatever you want among the other 12 options.
Imagem

Step 8:
Now its time to build the floppy itself, due to obviously reasons, use a blank formated or if possible a new floppy. All you have to do is insert the floppy in the drive, click in [Create disc] and wait till it ends.
Imagem

Step 9:
Another new feature is found here, now you can build your HD installer floppy. The main advantage of this feature is that the user is not risked to use by mistake another version, and does not have to download another software to build this floppy.

Done!
Time to put it to work, and see if the time spent on generating this disc was wasted or not.
